The Double Eye
Hervé Baudat
A year with my Rollei FW
Hervé Baudat's The Double Eye launches a new series by BERGGER éditions featuring the theme "A year with …". A photographer and camera form a duo, and sometimes even a couple, either faithful or fleeting.

1. Hervé Baudat / Rollei FW
Hervé Baudat, a photographer with a fondness for silver grains and other chemical acids, was born in the early seventies and has produced many portraits of artists, faces of people he meets, and his own circle of friends and family. He can be spotted with his 6x6, 6x7 and 4x5 hardware in his little village in southern Corsica, in Veneto during the winter, or tramping the streets of Paris. His photographs feature in the collections of the Musée Rodin and Bibliothèque Nationale, inter alia.

The medium-format twin lens Rollei FW camera features a wide-angle Schneider Angulon f/4 50mm lens. The wide-angle Rollei was made between 1961 and 1967. A version manufactured by Schneider has been marketed since 2002 under the name Rollei FW.

I contacted Hervé in the late summer to tell him about my idea of putting together a collection of photographic works pairing up a photographer with a camera. He swiftly replied: "Thanks for this amazing suggestion! I'm particularly pleased as I'm pretty much trapped in Corsica and my brain cells are evaporating in this dreadful heat. I'll give it some thought very quickly. I'm planning to go home for a bit on Monday. I hope you had a good summer. I learnt a new word today – gonzo – I like it and it suits me down to the ground."

We produced this gonzo book with a mixture of text and photographs in the space of a few weeks. Hervé would send me texts and photos from his kitchen in Corsica, often early in the morning, and we would exchange ideas. Whenever he came back to Paris, we would meet up to polish and hone the texts and links. He was entitled to two jokers and I had a power of veto. In the end it was one-all. The Double Eye is Hervé's diary spanning the period November 2017 to November 2018. From Eros to Thanatos.

When I press the shutter, I change perceptions of my life, I add new characters to the novel. I unveil previously hidden protagonists.

Pictures prompt me to change tack. I scuttle my own ship or set out to sea. I raise the Jolly Roger. I start boarding other vessels.
